Top 10 Biggest Premier League Wins in History

Do you know what the biggest win in the Premier League is? Although it changes from season to season, the average amount of goals scored in a Premier League game is often 2.5. Given the low-scoring nature of football, it is unlikely that punters would instinctively expect a 9-0 Premier League score. However, there have been a few occasions throughout the years where one team has scored a ton of goals and the other has been humiliated by the result.ย

Let’s take a look back and refresh our memories of the Premier League’s greatest victories in this article created for you by our team of football experts here at MrBetting.co.uk!

Manchester United 9-0 vs. Ipswich Town โ€“ March 4, 1995

It’s widely believed to be one of the biggest victories in English football. With Eric Cantona, who was five Premier League games into his sentence for kicking a supporter in the chest, out of the lineup after Manchester United’s heartbreaking 1-0 loss to Everton, the team came in at Old Trafford. They certainly weren’t anticipating a huge victory from United, given the odds in football.

Despite having only five goals in 22 games that season, Sir Alex Ferguson felt compelled to start Andy Cole with new addition Mark Hughes. It was one of the biggest Premier League victories ever as Cole scored five goals, Hughes added two, and Roy Keane and Paul Ince each scored one.

Newcastle United 8-0 vs. Sheffield Wednesday โ€“ September 19, 1999

This was the first home English Premier League football match since the late Bobby Robson took the lead in the league season for the Magpies. Additionally, it was the St. James’ Park game that solidified Alan Shearer’s status at Newcastle. Five goals from Alan Shearer in this game was the highlight of his career at the time. The other players that registered goals were Aaron Hughes, Kieron Dyer, and Gary Speed. Sheffield Wednesday was demoted that season because they were unable to bounce back from this loss. Since then, the team has not competed in the EPL.

Tottenham 9-1 vs. Wigan Athletic โ€“  November 22, 2009

Another Premier League history took place 10 years after the last one, between Tottenham and Wigan Athletic. In the 50th minute of the game, Spurs were ahead 1-0, and there were few indications that they would soon give up.

After Peter Crouch headed the ball into the net, Jermaine Defoe scored from close range to make the result 3-0. Wigan’s Paul Scharner managed to get one back, but it wasn’t nearly enough. Defoe added three more goals later on, Chris Kirkland made an own goal, and Niko Kranjcar scored the last goalโ€”the last of Spurs’ nine goalsโ€”into the net.

Chelsea 8-0 vs. Wigan Athletic โ€“ May 9, 2010

A little over a year later, Wigan entertained Chelsea supporters at Stamford Bridge once more. To prevent Manchester United from winning the Premier League for the fourth time in a row, Carlo Ancelotti’s team needed to win all three points. After six minutes, Wigan’s luck drastically changed when Nicholas Anelka gave the Blues the lead.

Salomon Kalou, Anelka, and Ashley Cole found their footing when Frank Lampard scored the second goal from the penalty spot. The Golden Boot went to Didier Drogba, who added a hat trick in the second half. Only one team outperformed the rivals by eight goals or more and went on to win the championship that year.

Chelsea 8-0 vs. Aston Villa โ€“  December 23, 2012

It would never have occurred that Chelsea would win another 8-0 game in less than two years, according to EPL betting odds. This time, Aston Villa was the team that suffered the crushing defeat. The third-minute goal was scored by Fernando Torres, who was enjoying a fantastic season at Stamford Bridge. Villa suffered their worst-ever defeat at the hands of goals from David Luiz, Oscar, Frank Lampard, Branislav Ivanovic, Eden Hazard, and a brace from Ramires.

The maximum number of players from a single side to score in a Premier League game was achieved by Chelsea, as seven different players contributed to the victory.

Southampton 8-0 vs. Sunderland โ€“  October 18, 2014

The Black Cats’ hilarious defence began in the 12th minute when Santiago Vergini from Sunderland scored a stunning own goal to open the score. After Liam Bridcutt and Patrick van Aanholt added to Vegini’s opening goal, they gave up seven more times through three own goals. The Southampton players that registered goals were Graziano Pelle, Jack Cork, Dusan Tadic, and Victor Wanyama.

Manchester City 8-0 vs. Watford โ€“  September 21, 2019

You know it’s going to be a tough afternoon on the field when you’re behind 5-0 in the first 18 minutes. That’s precisely what happened to Watford in 2019โ€”they gave up five goals more quickly than any other side in Premier League history, making it a Premier League record. Watford allowed three more goals even though their last 72 minutes of play were somewhat better than their opening 18.

One of the worst days ever experienced by the Hornets fans was brought on by a hat-trick from Bernardo Silva and goals from David Silva, Sergio Aguero, Riyad Mahrez, Nicholas Otamendi, and Kevin de Bruyne.

Leicester City 9-0 vs. Southhampton โ€“  October 25, 2019

The biggest Premier League defeat for Southampton, it was only the second occasion in Premier League history that Southampton managed to let up nine goals, but also let two players score hat tricks in the same game. Ayoze Pรฉrez and Jamie Vardy each scored three goals, and Ben Chilwell, Youri Tielemens, and James Maddison all registered goals.

Manchester United 9-0 vs. Southampton โ€“  February 2, 2021

In less than a year and a half, Southampton was humiliated once more by Man United, this time at Old Trafford in a home game for United.  In this match, Man United’s seven different scorers tied Chelsea’s 2012 record. The other goals were scored by Marcus Rashford, Edinson Cavani, Scott McTominay, Bruno Fernandes, Daniel James, Anthony Martial, Aaron Wan Bissaka, and an own goal by Southampton defender Jan Bednarek.

Liverpool 9-0 vs. Bournemouth โ€“  August 27, 2022

In their first three games of the 2022โ€“23 season, Liverpool had only picked up two points, so they had to prove themselves, and they did so against Bournemouth, a newcomer to the Premier League.

At halftime, the Cherries trailed 5-0 and let up four more goals in the second half. Virgil van Dijk, Fabio Carvhalo, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Harvey Elliot, Chris Mepham, Luis Diaz, and Fabio Carvhalo were among the players who scored in an outstanding performance by Roberto Firmino, who also assisted on three assists.
